Video Lust : Rihanna's 'We Found Love'
Lots of controversy over Lust Icon Rihanna's new video "We Found Love", but what else would you expect?
Before the video even debuted, news broke that filming was interrupted by an angry farmer in Ireland. Rihanna was shooting scenes from the video on his farm and he was "outraged" over her public nudity. That's the least of the controversial material. There is plenty of drug references in the video's plot circling around an abusive relationship.
However, if you're paying attention to flashes of the word "loser" and how what seems like drug use [a shot to the buttocks] leads to something else [not a drug needle, but a tattoo needle], you can see how cleverly it's done. If you want to reference the past, you can easily see influence from another Lust Icon, Madonna, and her videos for "Ray of Light" and "What it Feels Like for a Girl". Or even another pop queen, Britney Spears, where Rihanna submerging in the bath reminded me of Spears' "Everytime".
Rihanna does it all in her own way though - with a bad ass attitude and a mean fashion sense.
Off the record, am I the only one who sees the comparison of the arguement in the car as the events that led up to Rihanna's infamous domestic violence dispute with Chris Brown [and can also argue that the Irish boxer's bleached head resembles Brown]? That story is so 2009 though.
I'll say this about the controvery, this is how music videos are supposed to be. A visual feast of art set to a beat that inspire and get people talkin'. Other artists should take note. I can't wait for Talk That Talk [November]. Lust with your eyes below:
