Video Lust : Lady Gaga's 'Yoü and I'

The Lust List is suddenly a big fan of teal. Lady Gaga's "Yoü and I" is the fourth single from Born This Way and what some call a return to the video style that established the teal-haired Lady Gaga as a musical genius.

The song itself was inspired by Gaga's relationship with rumored on-again-off-again boyfriend Lüc Carl, and the video symbolizes that exact idea of relationships. In the video, Gaga walks from New York City to Nebraska [actual location of the video] to get her boyfriend back. According to Gaga: "I'm walking with no luggage and no nothing and it's just me and my ankles are bleeding a little bit and there's grass stuck in my shoes and I've got this outfit on and it's real sort of New York clothing and I'm sprinting... And the [video is about the] idea that when you're away from someone you love, it's torture," she continued. "I knew I wanted the video to be about me sprinting back and walking hundreds of thousands of miles to get him back."

Lüc Carl does not appear in the video, instead Gaga's love interest is played by herself. Or rather, her alternate male ego "Jo Calderone". Along with Calderone, her other mermaid alter ego, "Yuyi", appears alongside actor Taylor Kinney in what's reffered to as sexual intercourse scenes. But how can a man have sex with a mermaid? Gaga explained that metaphorically it emphasized the fact that sometimes relationships did not work. "No matter what you do, there's this giant boundary between you and someone else. So that's what it's about, perceiving in your imagination that there's something magical inside of you that you can make it work."

Ice cream trucks [which accroding Gaga represent the destruction of her youth], dancing in fetish attire inside a hay barn [and submerged in a tank], torture scenes with a mad scientist, a grey haired Gaga as a bride, and corn field scenes with Queen guitarist Brian May [the song samples the bands "We Will Rock You"] all make up lustable visual delight as only Gaga can do.

Rolling Stone explains, "the best moments of the video put a distinctly Gaga-ish spin on the iconography of Americana and traditional love stories."

Video Lust : Madonna's 'Express Yourself'

"Express Yourself" is Lust Icon Madonna's second single from the Like A Prayer album. The queen of reinvention flips the script on us. The opening lines of the song take us in the complete opposite direction of "Material Girl" in which she sings, "you don't need diamond rings or eighteen karat gold".

In fact, the main inspiration behind "Express Yourself" is female empowerment, urging women never to "go for second-best" and to put their love "to the test". We all dig the guy with satin sheets, but what happens when you're not in his bed?

Madonna tells Rolling Stone, "the ultimate thing behind the song is that if you don't express yourself, if you don't say what you want, then you're not going to get it. And in effect you are chained down by your inability to say what you feel or go after what you want. No matter how in control you think are about sexuality in a relationship there is always the power struggle...always a certain amount of compromise. Of being beholden, if you love them. You do it because you choose to. No one put the chain around this neck but me. I wrote 'Express Yourself' to tell women around the world that pick and choose the best for yourself, before that chain around your neck, kills you instead. Its my take on how man can express what they want, the same prerogative should be there for a woman too."

The video is set in a dark and busy metropolis where muscular men work in the steam and rain. Madonna appears as a lonely but strong figure of beauty and grace in double-breasted suits, silk nightgowns, nude corsets, and nothing at all. One analysis explains that Madonna is shown in a seductive manner and chained to her bed not to portray women in an empowering position, but rather to emphasize the fact that women can be in control because of their sexual prowess.

David LaChapelle

Growing up at the height of silly white rappers, lustful pop music ladies, and all of our favortie boy bands, it wasn't always the music that created the image. Magazines like Rolling Stone and Blender [remember that one?] featured artistis like Britney Spears, Eminem, and Pink all photographed and stylized by David LaChapelle.

David LaChapelle is a renown photographer working in the fields of fashion, advertising, and fine art photography. His work has been described as surreal, unique, sexualized, and often humorous. Just a good ol' American boy from Conneticut who fled the suburban life for New York City.

It was in New York where LaChapelle met Andy Warhol in the lustworthy hot spot Studio 54. Warhol offered him a job as a photographer for Interview magazine. Interview magazine led to Rolling Stone, Vogue, GQ, Photo, and Vanity Fair [among many others].

LaChapelle hasn't stopped there. He has directed two films, "Krumped" and "Rize", as well as numerous television ads for brands like H&M and shows like "Desperate Housewives". In 2004, he took his vision to the stage directing Elton John's "The Red Piano" in Las Vegas.

I lust for the style of LaChapelle's work, having been a fan since seeing his witty photos of Britney Spears. He has a way of taking ideas of the present day and throwing them in society's face. His subjects are always styled in a combination of sex and glamour, usually with some sort of religious aspect idolizing them in a way. I'm an even bigger fan whenever he works with the iconic Pamela Anderson, like the photo above.

LaChapelle has worked with everyone from Lady Gaga and Madonna to Angelina Jolie and Hugh Hefner. He has published numerous books for your coffee table including Heaven to Hell, Hotel LaChapelle, and Artists and Prostitutes.

Lust Icon : Madonna

Yes. The answer is yes. I'm extremely intimidated with the idea of tackling Madonna as a Lust Icon. How could I convey to the world how iconic and amazing Madonna is? What photos would I even use? Should I pick someone else this go-around? Someone easier, like say, Lady Gaga?

I sometimes strangely loathe the fact that I even like Madonna [oh-kay LOVE Madonna]. It all just sounds so cliché for a gay man to love Madonna. But, I don't love Madonna the way we all at some point love her. Without sounding like a fanatic, I worship Madonna. Now I know that sounds extreme but, I'm not a crazy person. Madonna is an icon of music, film, fashion, art, and lifestyle. I don't need millions of record sales and awards to prove that. Who she is and what she does in the way that she does it, to me, seals the deal. How does she do that? With absolutely no regrets.

Madonna Louise Ciccone is a child of Italian decent from Bay City, Michigan. Of her youth, she recalls herself as a "lonely girl who was searching for something. I wasn't rebellious in a certain way. I cared about being good at something. I didn't shave my underarms and I didn't wear make-up like normal girls do. But I studied and I got good grades.... I wanted to be somebody." It was that ambition that drove her to drop out of college and pursue a dance career in New York City. She moved to New York in 1977 with only $35 in her pocket and describes the decision as "the bravest thing I'd ever done."

Lust Icon : Beyoncé

Who runs the world? Well, who's runnin' the fashion world in this month's W Magazine? Mrs. Beyoncé Carter [that is her name now, right?]. Scantily clad in all the latest Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, and a little Gucci. I'm a little bummed she didn't show her fierceness with the Givenchy Panther Hat, but we do see the Louis Vuitton Masks showed up to the party [mulitple times].

We all know the back story to Beyoncé; puttin' on a show since the day she was born at beauty shops in Houston, establishing herself in Destiny's Child, and a phenomenol solo career in music, fashion, film, and playing wifey to Jay-Z. All the aspects of a Lust Icon.

Beyoncé recently dropped her fourth studio album, 4, and it's yet another classic. Rolling Stone reviews, "Beyoncé has made a career of setting trends, and on 4, she leaves fashionable production styles behind. There's no Eurodisco thump; live instruments take the place of digital beats on many tracks. Half the songs are ballads, but all kinds of sounds filter through the mix - vintage soul, hard rock, reggae, adult contemporary." Has she ever put out a bad album? or video? or performance? 4 stars in my book.

Pure Lust : Zac Efron

Here at the Lust List I've always focused on models, icons, fashion, but I've never picked an actor as an object of lust and admiration. However, I've had consistent requests from a Lust List follower to put Zac Efron on the list.

Where would I squeeze in Zac Efron? Not particularly Model Lust since he's yet to be featured as the face of any brand or fashion house. I thought about Husband Lust [a category in the works, stay tuned!] but, Zac seems like he'd be more fun as a fling. I definitely admire his "California cool" fashion, but the Lust Icon title is reserved for the outrageous and inspiring.

At his High School Musical prime, I didn't take much interest. First, he was a minor, which just seems wrong, and second, I've never been a big fan of musicals. Searching through the net, and repeatedly watching Charlie St. Cloud, I did come to appreciate the man that Zac is growing into. His fashion sense has become more grown up and definitely shows some effort. I love a man who isn't afraid to try new looks  [or facial hair] and that beefed up physique he's recently been showing off...pure lust. And so it hit me, Pure Lust : Zac Efron.

Zachary David Alexander Efron [I'm a sucker for a cute name] is an American actor, singer, and dancer. He was put in the spotlight by the powerhouse that is known as Disney but, after Rolling Stone declared him the "posterboy for tweenyboppers" he has since taken on flims that depart from that image like 17 Again and Charlie St. Cloud. It's a step in the right direction.

Zac was born in San Luis Obispo, California [a city close to my heart] and raised in nearby Arroyo Grande. Squeaky clean his entire life, he's quoted as saying he would "flip out" if he got a B instead of an A in school, I can't wait for him to take on manhood and get all dirty on us in a film, magazine spread, or social scandal. I'm hoping this will come true now that he is recently single and taking on bachelorhood. Check out the pictures below from a recent spread in another one of our favorite publications Wonderland.
