The only thing sexier than Mr. Sam Sparro himself is his vocals. Born in Sydney, Australia, it seems the lustable Sam Sparro [who claims to be a quarter Portuguese] has been singing most of his life.
Sparro moved to LA at the age of 10 while his father recorded a soul album and it seems this genre is at the heart of his vocals. He performed backing vocals for his father's concerts and music releases and it's rumored that Chaka Kahn is one of his most notable early admirers. He returned to Sydney for a short time before returning to LA to work in a coffee shop. Described as the "low points" of his life, it was at this time he wrote his single Black & Gold.
It wasn't until April 2008 that Black & Gold would be released on Sparro's debut album, Sam Sparro. It was released in the UK and reached the top five on the UK Album Charts, eventually receiving a gold certification for its sales. The song Black & Gold was later nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 2008 Grammy Awards.
During the promotion for Black & Gold, Sparro covered American Boy by Estelle on BBC Radio 1. The cover is pretty outstanding and shows off those amazing vocals. Anxiously, the world is awaiting the release of his second album which is rumored to be wrapping up. In the meantime he's been busy working with Basement Jaxx and Mark Ronson.
Sparro is openly gay, making him a certified Lust Icon, and has appeared on the cover of Attitude magazine. I've seen Mr. Sparro perform twice, gracing us with his presence in all those hip LA clubs. He's a riot in person and via text message [I wouldn't exactly call us friends, I only wish I was that cool]. Probably in my top five all time favorite songs is the acoustic version of Black & Gold, which includes the lyrics "if vision is the only validation, then most of my life isn't real". His music holds a special place in my heart, especially because of all the memories I have of his music and this one random boy I got to know last summer.
